Frequently Asked Questions
What are stocks, and how do they work?
A stock (also called a share or equity) represents partial ownership in a company. When you buy a stock, you become a shareholder with a proportional claim on that company's assets and profits.
A stock gives you exposure to a single company, so your investment's performance is tied directly to how that company performs, its earnings, its decisions, and how the market values its prospects. Share prices rise and fall continuously based on supply and demand.
What types of stocks can I invest in on Mintos?
On Mintos you can invest in stocks of established, well-known companies listed on major regulated exchanges. The selection focuses on companies with sufficient trading liquidity and reliable pricing so you can buy and sell at a fair market price.
You can browse the full selection or search for a specific company in the Stocks section of your Mintos account.
How does Mintos select which stocks to offer?
Mintos applies selection criteria before adding any stock to the platform. We look at:
- Stock exchange: the stock must be listed on a major, well-regulated exchange.
- Liquidity: sufficient trading volume so orders can be executed at a fair price.
- Reliable pricing: transparent, continuously available market pricing throughout trading hours.
What are the risks of investing in stocks?
All investments carry risk, and stocks are no exception. Key risks to be aware of include:
- Market risk: the value of your investment can fall as well as rise, depending on overall market conditions. You could lose some or all of your invested capital.
- Company-specific risk: your investment depends on one company; that company's results, management decisions, competitive position, or insolvency can reduce the value of your holding significantly, in the worst case, to zero.
- Concentration risk: holding only a few individual stocks leaves your portfolio exposed to a small number of companies. Spreading investments across more companies, sectors, and regions reduces this risk.
- Currency risk: many instruments are economically exposed to a currency other than the euro (e.g., US shares), even when you buy and sell them in euro on this platform. Exchange-rate movements between the euro and that currency will affect your returns, independently of the instrument's own price.
- Liquidity risk: in unusual market conditions, or for stocks with lower trading volumes, it may be harder to buy or sell at your expected price.
- Corporate action risk: events such as a delisting, an insolvency, or a merger on unfavorable terms can affect the value or the liquidity of your holding. Mintos processes these events on your behalf but cannot change the terms a company sets.
- Stocks are regulated financial instruments, but this does not remove market or company risk. Always invest in line with your financial goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon, and only invest money you can afford to lose.
What fees apply when buying or holding stocks on Mintos?
There are no Mintos commissions to buy or sell stocks and no ongoing holding, custody, or inactivity fees on the stocks you hold. Global stocks are offered natively in EUR on the Mintos platform, and there are no foreign exchange (FX) charges added. Stocks of non-euro companies are exposed to currency risk, even when priced in euros. An individual stock also carries no annual management fee, because there is no fund and no fund manager involved; you own the company's shares directly.
As with any investment, the usual market price differences may still apply, and in case any occasional third-party costs apply, those would be communicated accordingly.
What is the minimum amount I can invest in stocks?
You can invest in stocks from €1. Because you invest a fractional euro amount rather than buying whole shares, you don't need the full price of one share to get started.
The minimum amount per order is shown on each stock's page before you confirm your investment.
